Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre
This was a fundraising dream which A-Line made a reality through collaboration between Northland’s District Health Board and generous donations from the Northland community. This 1,636m2 spacious, purpose-built cancer treatment centre is dramatically upgraded from its previous inadequate facilities. The new centre provides day-stay treatment for cancer patients, including initial consultations, chemotherapy treatments and follow-up from medical experts including other related nursing and support services. Designed as a two-level structure, with the service rooms and full wards effectively at ground level, this building will house 50 people at a time, with up to 30 treatments a day being conducted. The new elevated, standalone building offers more space, privacy and comfort to patients. In keeping with its local, day-care aspect, the building is designed to feel non-clinical, with nine chemotherapy treatment chairs positioned by large windows overlooking green space, making it welcoming and homely to those who visit the centre. The building also houses flexible meeting areas, consulting rooms, a procedure room, children’s spaces and the ability to grow its capacity in line with community needs. The 895m2 basement area has been designed to allow for future expansion if more space is ever needed.
